The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.
This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback
One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived initially under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role.
